Mary Alice Long, PhD
Mary Alice’s treatment methods include a depth-oriented approach to build awareness and conscious action, with a focus on dreams and the unconscious, playful exploration through various art forms, and sandplay therapy.
Mary Alice is deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung and those who have followed him by writing and teaching in the area of analytical psychology. Her interest in the arts, the creative process, and improvisation supported by the collective unconscious has led Mary Alice to an integration of arts and psychology in her work as a therapist.
Jung considered the Self to be the primary healing agent of the psyche. Mary Alice sees her role as holding sacred the space in which to work/play while encouraging exploration of the patient’s dynamic images that are revealed in dreams, fantasies, and creative expressions. Through an active engagement with these alive images the patient increases personal awareness and from there can make conscious choices in life.
